Americans are starting to question what aspects of our history we should choose to celebrate. Several states have replaced Columbus day with Indigenous People Day, or Native American day. Similarly, in the south, Americans are questioning if it is appropriate to memorialize confederate leaders in the form of statues, going as far as tearing them down themselves in protest. In August, a protest supposedly against the legal removal of one such statue organized by white nationalists in Charlottesville turned violent when faced with counter-protesters. During the week of Columbus day, we are inviting our members to respond to the increasingly heated struggle to define America.
